Ashley Inguanta is a writer and photographer who is driven by landscape, place. She earned her MFA from the University of Central Florida, and she has also worked as a Creative Writing Instructor at Lakeside Alternative, a mental health facility. In 2011, she served as the director of Maitland Poets & Writers, where she lead community workshops and hosted a monthly reading series.
In 2012, Ashley joined SmokeLong Quarterly as Staff Editor, Art Director, and Art Interview Editor. One year later, she was named on of “6 Central Florida poets to know” by Orlando Arts Magazine. This year, she was named the Best Poet in Orlando by The Orlando Weekly. She has also been featured in publications like Redivider, Bartleby Snopes, Functionally Literate Podcast, Everyday Fiction, The Great American Brainstorm, American Microreviews & Interviews, and New Books in Poetry.
Her photography has appeared in places like Adrienne: A Poetry Journal of Queer Women, OCHO, make/shift magazine, Corium, and The Doctor T.J. Eckleburg Review. Also, she has a growing portfolio on Vogue Italia’s Web site, Vogue.it, and has photographed book covers for authors such as Darlin’ Neal and Nicole Monaghan.
Her fiction, poetry and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Adrienne: A Poetry Journal of Queer Women, OCHO, The Good Men Project, SmokeLong Quarterly, PANK, Wigleaf, Gone Lawn, Pindeldyboz, Elephant Journal, Breadcrumb Scabs, and Sweet: A Literary Confection, among other journals. She earned an Honorable Mention in Glimmer Train for their Very Short Fiction Award, and Ashley was nominated as UCF’s choice for the AWP Intro Journals Award in fiction. Most recently, her poem “San Andreas Fault” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize by The Ampersand Review.
A longer story of hers, “Corina’s Blue Horse,” has been anthologized in Francesca Lia Block’s Love Magick, and she published an anonymous flash fiction piece in Nicole Monaghan’s anthology, Stripped.
Ashley has also been a part of several collaborative projects and reading series, including Burrow Press’s 15 Views of Orlando and There Will Be Words (hosted by J. Bradley), as well as the international Literary Death Match (hosted by Adrian Todd Zuniga and presented by Burrow Press). She is also an artist for MOPE, Mind of Pink Elephants Designs, a company that promotes artists and writers.
In 2013, Dancing Girl Press published her first collection, The Way Home, which she translated into a live performance (at the Timucua Arts White House) with musicians Mandy Burgan and Benoit Glazer and dancer Christin Carlow.
That same year, Ashley joined forces with musician Rhae Royal and continued to work with dancer Christin Carlow (now Caviness) for Body, Out + 7 Ways of Unfolding, a poetry sequence performed at Orlando’s I Believe in You show at The Space.
Ashley’s newest collection, For the Woman Alone (poetry + photography), came out with Ampersand Books in June 2014. In November, she performed this collection at The Gallery at Avalon Island (Orlando, Florida) with Emotions Dance Company and Mark J. DeMaio of The Flammable Babylon Percussion Ensemble. Christin Carlow also joined her for a performance at Valencia College.
Ashley has also had the honor of reading from For the Woman Alone at Berl’s Poetry Shop in New York City as well as the “Out of Cupid’s Mouth” event, at Book Soup in Los Angeles, and at The Southern Fried Poetry Festival in Little Rock, Arkansas.
She is currently working on her third book, Bomb, a full-length collection of poetry forthcoming with Ampersand Books in 2016.
